Mapping of Culture Assets in Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa and Punjab

Project Strategies

Close consultation with stakeholders is an integral part of the strategy adopted for the implementation of the mapping project. The wide range of stakeholders/UNESCO partners includes the federal, provincial, district and local level governments, local communities, partner NGOs, universities, schools, teachers and also the donor.

As reflected in the project document, the following modalities were adopted thus producing encouraging results:

1. From each selected district, social mobilizers were selected and trained in data collection and data entry in GIS
2. Through scoping exercises, cultural assets, tangible and intangible, were identified for mapping, documentation and cataloguing; standard formats and methodologies for the exercise were developed
3. Training workshops on data collection and use of GIS were conducted in relevant districts
4. Alliance/partnership with Aga Khan Cultural Services, Pakistan (AKCSP); Hazara University; Mardan University; Pervaiz Vandal and Associates (PVA); Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA); and Lok Virsa were developed for smooth project implementation and sharing of experiences and success stories on mapping of cultural heritage in other parts of the country
5. Students from local colleges/universities were involved in undertaking awareness-raising campaigns and the mapping exercise
6. Community participation was a significant component of the project to ensure sustainable results
7. It is expected that the mapping process will lead the way to conservation/preservation activities in line with recommendations emerging from the mapping exercise, aimed towards sustainable development and promotion of cultural tourism
8. Promotional materials such as documentaries and publications have lent great visibility and credibility to the concept of mapping and work being done by UNESCO and its partners
